We recently interviewed Shelley Folkes, WOW facial's Hereford based practitioner
Shelley is a registered nurse, qualifying from Southampton University in 2001. Shelley started her aesthetics career after completing her basic training in Manchester in early 2016. She owns and runs The Glow Clinic Hereford that specialises in improving people's confidence through natural aesthetics.
How long have you been working as a practitioner?
I have been a registered nurse for just over 20 years and I have been trained in the speciality of medical aesthetics for nearly 6 years.
What made you go into the field?
It was a combination of “practitioner healthy self” as I suffered adult acne for many years and a burning desire to offer my children a mum who could be more present.
Which are the biggest skin woes your patients come to you with?
I see all sorts across the skin spectrum but I think probably ageing and acne are the top two I treat.
What skincare advice do you give your clients?
I educate my clients on their skin type and how they best serve their type to get the best out of it. A common mistake people make is thinking they are only one skin type but often people are more of a combination and female skin, in particular, can vary along with their hormonal cycles. Often it’s really simple things that can make a big difference. I rid them of bad habits and encourage them to invest in their skin a bit more as it should really be seen as part of your health routine as well as your beauty routine.
What would you say it’s the biggest cause of ageing skin?
The sun. The end.
What age would you recommend beginning to have advanced skin treatments?
I think it's never too early to start having advanced skin treatments but obviously time, budget and personal priorities play a big part. Prevention is better than cure after all and with skin this is all too true. Some of my clients have skin complaints such as acne, so they seek out treatments younger as it’s more of a priority to them.
How often do you recommend having an advanced treatment?
It depends on the skin and what is trying to be achieved and the treatments they are having. Most skin types can benefit from regular treatments, like 4 - 8 weekly, but certain skin conditions require a far more intense course of treatment. Other advanced skin treatments require from 3 to 6 monthly. There is no one prescription for great skin!
How many WOW facials would you say you've done to date?
Thats so hard to say! It must be 50 - 100.
What made you choose WOW facial® over any other facial brands?
I loved the simplicity of it and the single-use element. Zero risks of cross-contamination. The results I saw were incredible and the science backed that up. I’d done tonnes of research as I’m such a science geek and the WOW fusion® device and the customer service from the WOW team just stood out.
What made you decide to partner with WOW?
As above, I wanted to add a needling treatment and possibly a mesotherapy arm to what I already offered; the device and the science were sound and I knew it would achieve great results for my patients and clients. What really shone through though, was the personal support and compassion from the company. Even as a small practitioner at the time I was treated with respect. Many companies only give you the time of day once you hit a certain size, with WOW they genuinely want all practitioners to be able to offer this to their clients and that speaks volumes. They really are only interested in getting great results for people receiving the treatments and supporting the practitioners to give a fantastic treatment.
What are your top three tips for healthy glowing skin post-treatment?
I give people a very specific skincare routine and provide them with post-procedure products that continue the treatment at home. Keeping the skin calm and hydrated is essential as is not using harsh exfoliants and following the advice given to you by your practitioner on the day of your treatment.
