Stop Guessing and Start BIOguiding: Biologically Guided Aesthetics Explained

Introducing BIOguided™, our Biologically Guided Aesthetics® platform, and why I decided the sector deserved better than educated guesswork.

Let me start with a confession, and I would ask you to be honest with me here too.

How have we been making the decision on our in-clinic protocols?

For most of the last twenty years, the way we have decided what goes into a patient’s skin has been expertise. Real expertise. A proper consultation, a careful history, trained observation, and years of hard won pattern recognition. This presentation, in this skin, in this age group, usually responds well to this.

So we use what we know best, what we have trained on, and what we have genuinely good reason to believe will get this patient the best result. For the most part, a large section of the sector works this way. Not everyone consults like this, of course. But BIOguided is aimed at the practitioners who already do it well and want to do it better.

Consulting this way is not lazy, and it is not guesswork. It is clinical judgement, and some of the practitioners in this country are extraordinarily good at it. After that we write a protocol, say something reassuring about consistency, and book them in for three to six sessions.

The harder question nobody has had to ask

And a lot of the time, it works. That is the awkward bit. It works often enough that nobody has had to ask the harder question. Why does the same protocol, delivered by the same practitioner, with the same products, at the same intervals, produce a spectacular result in one patient and a polite disappointment in another?

So far, we have answered that with vibes. Compliance. Sun exposure. Stress. “Some people just don’t respond.” Water intake is my personal favourite, as though hydration alone has been quietly sabotaging collagen synthesis across the Home Counties.

The real answer is simpler. Those two patients were never the same patient. Not at the level that matters. For years we have treated the average patient from small clinical trials. Yet nobody on your treatment couch is average. They are all biologically unique.

A short detour through Barnsley

I did not arrive in aesthetics by a glossy route. I am from Barnsley. My accent still gets stronger when I am home, angry or tipsy.

BIOguided feels like a full circle moment for me, though. I spent three years studying human biology at Barnsley College. My dad, who still lives there, was a plant geneticist who studied at Newcastle University, and Newcastle is who we are now collaborating with on the mitochondrial skin test.

So it is a classic case of ending up at fifty years old exactly where my education and my parentage always pointed me, which I never expected. WOW facial®, a Barnsley brand as I call it, is already a hyper personalised skin system. Biologically guided aesthetics feels like the way I was always supposed to go. It takes that personalisation to the next level.

What pharmaceuticals taught me about evidence

I started in pharmaceuticals in 2008, in dermatology and allergy. That world has a particular discipline to it. You do not get to say a product does something because it feels like it does. Instead, you produce the evidence, or you do not make the claim. Nobody thinks you are a killjoy for asking, either.

Then I moved into aesthetics in 2011, and the contrast hit me almost immediately. The energy was extraordinary. So was the creativity, the entrepreneurialism, and the sheer number of brilliant women building serious businesses out of nothing. I loved it, and I still do.

But the standard of evidence had loosened considerably somewhere between the lab and the treatment couch. “Clinically proven” had quietly come to mean “we did a study on eleven people and one of them was the marketing director.”

So I built WOW facial®. I designed and developed it myself from 2016, alongside a team of medics and advanced skincare specialists, and I founded WOW Facial Ltd in 2019. We have since grown into a multi brand business with no external investment. I mention that not to boast, but because it matters to what comes next. Everything we have built has been paid for by practitioners who kept coming back. That is the only mandate I have ever had, and I take it seriously.

The point where things changed for me

Somewhere around 2022, I stopped being able to unsee the pattern.

The sector had moved into regenerative aesthetics, a term I have never entirely loved. Partly that is because it now seems to be applied to everything short of a hot flannel.

The shift itself was real, though, and so was what practitioners started telling me about it. I heard the same sentence over and over. It came from different clinics, in different parts of the country, from people with nothing in common except that they were good at their jobs. Some patients get a spectacular result, some see almost no difference, and I can’t tell you why.

They were not blaming their patients, and the products were not the target either. What they were describing was a pattern they could not explain, and nobody was giving them a better answer than “everyone’s different.”

That is what really got me thinking. And once I had seen it, I could not unsee it.

We would send two clinics the same protocol and the same products. One would send me before and afters I wanted to frame. The other would say “it was ok.” And the variable was never the practitioner, because these were excellent clinicians. The variable was the patient’s biology, which nobody in the room had ever measured. Measuring it simply was not something our sector did.

Medicine has already moved on. Oncology moved. Cardiology moved. Longevity medicine moved. Meanwhile aesthetics, which puts genuinely powerful actives into human tissue, was still working from a laminated skin type chart and a strong hunch.

That felt indefensible to me. So we built the alternative, and we called it biologically guided aesthetics.

So, what is Biologically Guided Aesthetics?

BIOguided™ is our biologically guided aesthetics platform. In plain terms, it takes a patient’s actual biology and turns it into a treatment protocol with a reason attached to every single line.

It reads four inputs.

  • 45 genetic markers across ten interconnected biological pathways. Those pathways are barrier and sensitivity, inflammation and inflammaging, oxidative stress, glycation, vascularity and redness, injectable readiness, degradation and stimulation of collagen and the ECM, methylation, repair and stress, and dark spots and pigmentation. There are some wellness markers in there too.
  • Mitochondrial health, because cellular energy is what actually funds repair.
  • A lifestyle profile, because genes load the gun and the weekends pull the trigger.
  • Skin scan data, so we can see what the biology is currently doing on the surface.

Out of that comes a phased protocol. What to do, in what order, at what frequency, and what to exclude. Best of all, it gives you the biological rationale behind each decision, written so the practitioner can defend it in consultation. Not because a system said so, but because the patient’s own biology said so.

It also tells you what not to do. That is the unglamorous half, and it is where a great deal of wasted money and disappointed patients currently live.

What BIOguided is not

Biologically guided aesthetics is not a crystal ball. Nor is it a replacement for a practitioner, though it is a considerably better briefing document for one. It does not promise anyone a jawline by Christmas. And it will not tell your patient what they want to hear, which I would argue is its single best feature.

It also will not save a protocol delivered badly. Biology is the map. You are still the driver.

Why I want to elevate skin health, not just sell into it

Because we are about eighteen months from a reckoning, and I would rather we walked into it than got dragged.

Regulation is tightening. Patients are better informed than they have ever been, and they are quite reasonably starting to ask why this treatment, for me, specifically. “Because it is very popular at the moment” will not survive that question much longer.

I do not want the aesthetics sector to be defended. I want it to be unarguable. Picture a practitioner in Doncaster, sitting opposite a sceptical patient, explaining with a straight face and a real reason exactly why this protocol and not that one. Then picture her being right.

We have the clinical skill in aesthetics. We always had that. What we have been missing is the evidence layer underneath it. That is what biologically guided aesthetics gives us: clinical judgement, with the biology to back it.

Come and see me in person

BIOguided™, our biologically guided aesthetics platform, launches at CCR 2026, ExCeL London, 1 and 2 October. You will find us on stand K16 in the Medical Longevity Summit, and we are on the Innovation Trail.

I am also speaking on the Discovery Stage on Thursday 1 October, 12:20 to 12:35. The session is called “Which Patient, In What Order? Why identical protocols produce different results.” It runs for fifteen minutes, it is not a sales pitch, and I would genuinely rather have the difficult questions than the polite ones.

Clinics on the waitlist hear everything first, so join the BIOguided waitlist before we launch. If you are coming to the show, you can also register for CCR 2026 here.

Come and find me. Bring your most stubborn non responder patient case. I will bring the biology.
